Action is the key that unlocks potential. It is what distinguishes the dreamers from the achievers. Many fall into the rut of constant dreams that remain on paper, never given the chance to come to life. These dreams are like a still born baby that is a threat even to the womb carrying it.

Africa is pregnant with much potential but there are things that we the people of Africa must begin to work on. There is need for a mind shift that will see us building and sustaining organizations that can be passed on to generations to come. There must be a shift from a dealing mentality to a building mentality. This means employers and employees alike are equally responsible for the type of organization that is passed on to the next generation.

Zimbabwe for example has come out of a severe economic period. Almost everyone had to make a plan to survive. Whilst it fostered an entrepreneurial spirit, it was a double edged sword that brought many vices resulting in the delay of our progress at many levels. The value of honest work has been forgotten by many as we are willing to put in very little to get out very much.

Solomon who lived many years back said:

“Whatever your hands find to do, do it with all your might; for there is no work, nor plan, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave where you go.

The value of honest work stipulates that what you are given to do, do it with all your strength and do it very well! This brings us face to face with a key to efficiency and great productivity. Africa has never been a continent occupied by lesser beings, we actually have a lot of mental capital. Some of our brains have gone on to the first world and produced feats of great marvel.

It is clear that Africans hold great potential that can propel us to the next level. My first trip to the USA revealed something to me; there are also beggars in the first world! Contrary to the belief of many that a green card or a visa to another country is the saviour from the shackles of poverty, I saw green card holders, well able men and women who were begging. The picture was the same in the UK. “Why and How?” I asked myself. This is supposed to be the Promised Land!

I know a friend. He left the confines of Africa and went to the United States of America. There was not much in his bank account; in fact he had just lost his job. When he got there, what he saw was opportunity and he started building what was then a small business. The last time I checked, he was employing over ten Americans and the business was growing in leaps and bounds. Yes, he is a Zimbabwean! (For more on his story visit www.purposeclinic.com )

What he took with him was a mindset, a winning mindset. John F Kennedy once said, “Don’t ask what your country can do for you rather ask what you can do for your country.” That is the mindset of a champion! You didn’t come to earth to look up to the government for solutions but to provide solutions to the government. Make it easy for anybody to govern because you are a solution provider.

Begin to build where you are. Develop the mindset of an action oriented person. Start with your family, church, the company you work for and your community. Do it with all your might! Be a ready builder; be ready to put in honest work for an honest price. When setbacks come, continue building on your dreams as they will soon bear fruit.
